American Son, by Christopher Demos-Brown, is a production about an interracial recently separated couple that are in a police precent trying to find their son. As the show progresses it becomes alarmingly clear that there’s a lot more underneath and the parents are forced to confront their own perspectives when it comes to racism, police brutality, and their own biases based on the their lived experiences. Sound’s job for this show is to every so often provide more and more anxiety, fear, and paranoia into the two parents. As terms of cues, there are phone texts being received and sent throughout the show as both the parents and even the police involved continue to get more anxious and agitated. Sound’s other job for this show is to provide an answer to what happened to the separated couple’s son, Jamal. But just like the show, even the answer itself isn’t as black and white as many would think.
